We are extremely grateful to Vale of Glamorgan Council for allowing us exclusive access into the old camp. Thanks also to Keith Franklin for arranging the visit, taking the photos and supplying the notes.
The chalets, Princes building and everything else had already been demolished to make way for a new housing estate and grassy area. The surviving Gaiety, Regency, Medical building and outdoor fun-pool were all generally in poor condition.
The paving outside was overgrown and cracked. Vandals had smashed many walls/windows/furniture/fixtures in all of the buildings. Broken glass and graffiti was everywhere. Guttering was down. The roofs had all badly leaked in the buildings and so the floorboards were rotten and missing in many places. Mould was everywhere. Carpets were mildewed. Ceiling tiles were missing. Ceiling and wall fabrics were shredded, hanging, dirty rags. Paint was peeling throughout. Tiles had lifted. Electrics were off and the electric boxes vandalised. Wiring was hanging and rotten. Lights had been removed from many rooms. Sea-gulls and cats lived in many of the buildings. The smell of damp and mould was awful - particularly in the Gaiety building. The camp water main was destroyed and capped by the housing developers. Much of this damage was caused during the reclamation of materials from the camp.
Furniture, cookers, fridges, linen and most fittings throughout all the camp buildings were all ripped down and piled up in the Gaiety for a huge camp sale. Some of the items that were unsold remained here.
Without the chalets filled with campers/customers, these buildings were far too large to house any facilities for use by locals/ordinary resort tourists. In 2005 they were finally demolished and the site cleared.
