Some of the best times were spent whilst working at Butlins between 1978-1981. I worked in the Cashiers Office which was located in the Reception Building. As cashiers we ran the Bingo (in the Regency), Donkey Derby, made up all the wages packets, handed out keys at reception on Saturdays, ran the daily Horse Races (upstairs in Pig and Whistle) supplied all the bars and shops with change, did a bank run to collect change.....great days. All of the staff were paid in cash on a Tuesday and most of it was spent at The Ocean Bar Nightclub on the pier that night!..... Great nights!
I have wondered about my fellow cashiers over the past 30 years, Simon, John, Julian, Ged and Barbara, Alison, Denise, Lynn, Lorraine etc etc. I am still in touch with Helen though after all these years. I met my husband who was working in Bognor as a bars manager in 1981, we have been married for 28 years!!!!!
I have fond memories of helping out on the 'day gate' taking money from the Day Visitors. A charming elderly gentleman had worked on the gate for years......called everyone 'sweetie'. He would meet and greet all of the coaches of visitors as they arrived for a day out.
My husband and I went back to Bognor for the first time since working and meeting there for our silver wedding. The 'camp' has changed so much..........I suppose it was ready to be brought uptodate and needed the investment to improve facilities..........but at the same time it was sad that all the old venues had gone.
